連詞，可以說是英語詞匯中一個很小的分類，以至于有的語法書上都沒有單獨進行分類，而把它分散到句子類型(簡單句、復合句、復雜句)中進行講解。其實，連詞屬于"虛詞"，所謂虛詞，就是不能單獨作為句子成份的詞。
也就是說，連詞本身不能作為句子的主語、定語、狀語等。但是實際上，連詞是一類很重要的詞，特別是當我們分析英語又長又復雜的句子時，弄清連詞和它的作用對于長難句的理解頗有意義。
顧名思義，連詞就是具有連接作用的詞，例如：and,but,or,nor,so,therefore,yet,however,for,hence,as well as,both…and,not only…but also,either…or,neither…nor,then等等。簡單地說，它的連接作用有兩種：
1.把詞與詞連接起來，也包括把詞組與詞組連接起來。例如：
We will die without air or water.沒有空氣或水，我們就會死亡。(or連接名詞)
She likes watching TV and playing piano.她喜歡看電視，彈鋼琴和唱歌。(and連接詞組)
2.把兩個句子連接起來，包括并列句和復合句。例如：
His room is bright but mine is gloomy.他的房間亮，我的房間暗。(but引導的并列句)
His leg hurt so that he didn't play in the game.他的腿受傷了，所以他不能參加比賽。(so that引導的復合句)
